이길이구 갤러리는 오는 10 월 18 일부터 12 월 20 일까지 마이큐(MY Q) B.1981 의 개인전 《사이, 흔적(Traces in between 》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 존재와 부재, 충만과 공허 사이의 간극 속에서 태어나는 ‘흔적’ 을 주제로, 작가가 회화라는 언어를 통해 삶의 리듬과 감정의 균형을 시각화한 신작들을 선보인다. “모든 것은 심장에서 시작된다.”

마이큐는 작업의 출발점을 늘 ‘심장’이라 말한다. 감정의 진동이 몸을 거쳐 선과 색으로 번져나가는 과정을 그는 하나의 기록으로 남긴다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 계획된 구상보다 즉흥적인 신체의 움직임에 따라 캔버스를 채워간다. 검은 선은 흐르고, 끊기고, 다시 이어지며 틈을 만들고, 그 사이를 색으로 메우거나 비워낸다. 그의 화면은 충돌과 유연함이 공존하는 리듬의 장(場)으로, 시간과 감정의 파동을 포착한다.

박영택 미술평론가의 시선: “화면이 음악처럼 흐른다.”

박영택 미술평론가(경기대학교 교수)는 이번 전시에 대해 다음과 같이 평한다. “마이큐의 화면은 검은 선으로 시작해 색과 붓질이 유동적으로 흘러가는 추상적 공간이다. 부드럽고 나른한 색조, 갈필의 선들이 유영하며 그 흐름은 마치 음악의 리듬처럼 느껴진다. 작가는 의도보다 몸의 감각에 따라 반응하고, 그 흔적은 시간과 감정의 기록으로 남는다.” 박 평론가는 또한 마이큐의 회화를 “몸의 행위가 감정의 기록으로 전환된 회화”로 해석한다. 그는 “마이큐의 그림은 물감과 붓질을 빌려 음악처럼 시간성을 가진 시각적 흐름을 만들어낸다”고 덧붙였다. 이처럼 그의 작업은 추상회화의 물질적 언어를 통해 음악적 울림과 내면의 리듬을 동시에 드러내는 것이 특징이다.

전방위 예술이 교차하는 회화

다재다능한 마이큐 작가의 감각은 그의 회화에 깊게 스며 있다. 그에게 색은 감정의 진동이며, 선은 움직임의 궤적, 붓질은 호흡의 리듬에 가깝다. 그의 화면은 보이지 않는 에너지와 감정의 흐름이 교차하는 장으로, 시각적 긴장과 정서적 울림을 동시에 만들어낸다. 이러한 회화적 언어는 구체적 형상을 배제하면서도 감정의 여운과 시간의 흔적을 남긴다. 이는 단순한 추상이 아니라, 삶의 감각을 기록하는 내면의 풍경에 가깝다. 멈춤과 흐름, 채움과 비움의 경계에서 태어난 마이큐의 화면은 그 경계 위에서 예술이 어떻게 삶의 리듬으로 존재할 수 있는지를 보여준다.

작가 소개
마이큐 (B.1981)

홍콩에서 유년 시절을 보낸 마이큐는 다문화적 감수성과 정서적 유연성을 체득하며 성장했다. 싱어송라이터이자 프로듀서로 오랜 시간 음악계에서 활약해온 그는 2021 년 2GIL29 GALLERY (이길이구갤러리)에서 열린 첫 개인전 〈What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?〉을 계기로 회화의 세계로 본격적인 발걸음을 내디뎠다.

그의 회화는 음악적 리듬과 감정의 진폭이 교차하는 독자적인 감성의 구조를 구축한다. 음악에서 출발해 회화로 확장된 감각을 통해, 그는 대중성과 예술성, 즉흥성과 절제 사이의 미묘한 긴장을 시각적으로 번역한다. 자유로운 선과 대담한 색채, 그리고 여백의 호흡이 만들어내는 화면은 감정의 리듬이자 시간의 흔적으로 작동하며, 예술이 삶 속에서 어떻게 존재할 수 있는가를 탐구한다.

이러한 접근은 한국 동시대 회화가 지닌 서정적 전통을 현대적 감각으로 갱신하며, 감성적 추상 회화의 새로운 방향을 제시한다. 그는 이케아 코리아, 신세계백화점, 아트조선, 그리고 여러 글로벌 브랜드들과의 협업을 통해 예술의 외연을 일상과 공간으로 확장해왔다. 특히 이케아 코리아와의 프로젝트 *‘창의적인 영감을 발현하는 공간 (Creative Space of Inspiration)’*에서는 작업과 휴식이 공존하는 공간을 직접 설계하며, 자신의 회화적 시선과 감정 구조를 반영한 생활 환경을 제안했다.

2023 년 두 번째 개인전 〈Soft Slam〉을 선보인 그는, 2024 년 김종영미술관 기획전 〈어떤 변화: Metamorphosis〉 에 참여하며 예술적 스펙트럼을 넓혔다. 마이큐는 대중문화의 감수성과 순수미술의 언어를 교차시키며, 한국 동시대 회화 속에서 자신만의 미학적 좌표를 견고히 구축해가고 있다. 그의 회화는 리듬이자 감정의 잔상이며, 동시에 예술이 삶 속에서 어떻게 호흡할 수 있는가에 대한 동시대적 응답으로 기능한다.





A Critic’s View: “The Canvas Flows Like Music”

Art critic Youngtaek Park (Kyonggi University) writes,
“MY Q’s canvases begin with black lines that evolve into fluid gestures of color and brushwork, creating abstract space. The soft tones and wavering lines drift as if guided by musical rhythm. The artist responds with bodily intuition rather than intention, leaving behind a record of time and emotion.” Park describes MY Q’s painting as “a transposition of bodily gesture into emotional record,” noting that his works “use paint and brushwork to create a visual rhythm that unfolds like music.” Through this, MY Q reveals both the physical and emotional resonance of abstract painting.

Painting Where Multidisciplinary Art Intersects

The multifaceted sensibility of MY Q permeates his paintings. For him, color becomes the vibration of emotion, line the trajectory of movement, and brushstroke the rhythm of breath. His canvases are charged spaces where invisible energy and emotion intersect, generating both visual tension and emotional resonance. While his language of abstraction avoids recognizable form, it leaves behind traces of emotion
and time — not as pure abstraction, but as an inner landscape that records the perception of life itself. Emerging between stillness and motion, between fullness and void, MY Q’s paintings embody a delicate balance. They reveal how art can exist as the rhythm of life itself.

My Q (B.1981)

Born in Hong Kong, MY Q grew up immersed in diverse cultural influences that shaped his emotional sensibility and adaptive vision. Having built a long career as a singer-songwriter and producer, he made his official entry into the art world with his first solo exhibition, What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?, at 2GIL29 GALLERY in 2021.

His paintings construct a distinctive emotional structure where musical rhythm and the amplitude of feeling intersect. Expanding from music into visual art, MY Q translates the subtle tension between spontaneity and restraint, between popular and painterly expression. Free lines, bold color, and the measured rhythm of emptiness compose his canvases—visual records of emotional rhythm and the passage of time.

His approach renews the lyrical sensibility of Korean contemporary painting with a modern, intuitive vocabulary, proposing a new direction for emotional abstraction. MY Q has collaborated with IKEA Korea, Shinsegae Department Store, Art Chosun, and several global brands to extend the reach of art into daily and spatial experience. In his project Creative Space of Inspiration with IKEA Korea, he designed a living environment where work and rest coexist, reflecting his painterly vision and emotional architecture within an everyday setting.

Following his second solo exhibition, Soft Slam (2023), and his participation in Metamorphosis (2024) at the Kim Chong Yung Museum, MY Q continues to expand his artistic spectrum. Bridging popular culture and fine art, he has established a distinct aesthetic position within Korean contemporary painting. His works embody rhythm and emotional resonance, functioning as a contemporary response to how art can inhabit and breathe within life itself.
