국제적으로 활동해온 현대미술작가 데비 한 (Debbie Han)은 영은미술관에서의 특별 기획전, Odyssey of Becoming: SHADOW PEOPLE 을 서소문성지 역사박물관에서 순회 전시로서 이어나간다.  

하이퍼 커넥티비티와 디지털 몰입이 일상이 된 오늘날, 데비 한(Debbie Han)의 작업은 인간 존재에 대한 깊고도 단단한 사유를 바탕으로 한다. 현대 사회가 직면한 내면의 공허와 관계의 단절을 섬세하게 포착하는 동시에, 인간성 회복과 정화로 나아가는 여정을 서사적으로 풀어낸다.

다양한 조각, 부조, 회화, 드로잉 연작들과 더불어 이번 전시의 중심을 이루는 섀도우 피플(Shadow People) 시리즈는 현대인의 자화상을 상징적으로 구현한 작품이다. 마치 스마트폰에 몰두한 현대인의 실루엣처럼 보이지만, 또한 자신의 심연을 응시하는 인간의 형상이기도 하다. 작가는 ‘그림자‘를 비추어 인간의 사회적 자아와 내면의 자아, 문명과 자연, 본질과 현상이 교차하는 지점을 탐색한다. ‘섀도우 피플’ 조각상의 몸을 타고 흘러내리는 안료는 단순한 조형 요소를 넘어, 정신의 정화와, 감정의 씻김, 그리고 내면의 회복을 시각화한다. 작가는 인간의 모순과 결함을 숨기지 않고, 그 안에서 공감의 가능성을 찾기 위한 노력, 즉 인간다움을 회복해 나가는 과정으로서의 예술을 이야기한다.

Internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Debbie Han continues her special exhibition Odyssey of Becoming: SHADOW PEOPLE, first presented at Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, as a traveling exhibition at the Seosomun Shrine History Museum.

In an era defined by hyper-connectivity and digital immersion, Debbie Han’s work is grounded in the profound and resolute contemplation on human existence. Her work reflects on the inner void and fractured relationships that emerge within technologically driven societies, while envisioning a narrative journey toward purification and the restoration of humanity.

Comprising a wide range of sculptures, reliefs, paintings, and drawings, the exhibition is anchored by the Shadow People series, which symbolically embodies a self-portrait of modern individuals. These figures resemble the silhouettes of people absorbed in their smartphones while simultaneously evoking human forms gazing into the depths of their own inner selves. Using the metaphor of the “shadow,” the artist explores the intersections of the social self and the inner self, civilization and nature, essence and appearance.

The pigments flowing down the bodies of the Shadow People sculptures extend beyond mere formal elements to visualize the purification of the mind, the cleansing of emotions, and inner restoration. Han does not hide human contradictions and flaws; instead she finds empathy through embracing these imperfections. This exhibition presents art as an ongoing process of becoming, seeking to recover our shared humanity.
